What are the barriers to girls' education in Tanzania?
- Costs: Primary school is free, secondary school is expensive, and tertiary education is even more. Often, disadvantaged families must pick one child (if they can pick any) to fully educate, and boys are usually prioritized. Due to these impossible trade-offs, girls in Tanzania have less access to education than boys.
- Physical Transportation: On average, students must walk anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours in each direction to attend school. Especially for girls, this can be highly unsafe.
- Child Marriage: Two out of five girls in Tanzania are married before they turn 18. Often married girls have to drop out of school because of pregnancy.
How does Sasamani's approach overcome these barriers?
- Costs: Students sponsored by Sasamani receive a full scholarship for school fees, uniforms, backpacks, school supplies, hygiene supplies, health insurance, and room and board.
- Physical transportation: Students sponsored by Sasamani receive room and board, where available, or a bicycle if boarding is not an option.
- Child Marriage: Sasamani's Education Director, a social worker, visits students monthly to get to know each family and their unique challenges. When families are relieved of the financial burden of school fees, child marriage is disincentivized as an economical choice.
